siff: stravinksy and the ballets russes on 5/14

Catch the “original” Fokine Firebird and Nijinsky Sacre du printemps, plus a restaging of Nijinska’s Les Noces at SIFF this week.

I wish I could tell you more about this movie, but, frankly, it is taxing my internet research skills. SIFF, busy with its huge and fabulous festival right around the corner, didn’t have a wealth of information about the film when I asked. It looks to be the movie put out by Emerging Pictures, though, featuring the Kirov Ballet at the Mariinsky Theater, Valery Gergiev conducting.

At any rate, we’ll find out more when we see the film…this Thursday at 7:30 pm…just a few days shy of the Ballets Russes 100th birthday: May 19.

Here’s a one-minute preview, from Emerging Pictures’ YouTube site. Also, some light is shed on the movie by Sandi Kurtz in the comments section. (Thanks!)

  1. The Sacre is the Millicent Hodson reconstruction, first worked out on the Joffrey in 1987 and then restaged for the Maryinsky, among other companies. It’s likely not a fully accurate reproduction of the original choreography, but it’s as close as we might hope to get considering the circumstances
