On the Boards and The Joyce (NYC) are pleased to present the return of The A.W.A.R.D. Show! 2011 in Seattle as a special event in OtB’s 10/11 Season. The controversial, conversation-starting dance competition which gives 12 contemporary dance makers the chance to showcase their work and win $10,000 was a sold out success in 2009, bringing new audiences for dance, sending $12,000 into the local dance community and inspiring ongoing dialogue about the performances and the format of the event. Please find a full release from The Joyce enclosed [editor’s note: sorry…not on the blog yet] and attached about the event and its growth for 10/11. The Seattle edition will take place from Jan 27 – 30, 2011.
For the 10/11 edition, we are excited to announce 2 Seattle-specific changes to The A.W.A.R.D Show!. After listening to feedback from participants, patrons and the wider community we felt it was important to allow applicants to send proposals for new work and to also offer honorariums to all the chosen participants. As an organization we value innovation and wanted to be able to address this more directly in our edition of the competition by opening up the proposals from the beginning. Additionally, we feel it is important to recognize the efforts of artists and compensate them accordingly.
We are accepting applications beginning now until May 11, after which a panel of representatives from our peer organizations will meet to collectively choose the lineup in each city. To apply, choreographers and dancers fill out and submit a form to the Joyce (available here: http://www.ontheboards.org/index.php?page=special_events_detail&perfID=271).
