Experience contemporary dance films from fresh and youthful perspectives! This annual concert presents dance majors from the UW Department of Dance expressing their creative voices through every aspect of dance production—from choreography and costumes to sound design and filming. Featuring new works from nine choreographers who explored the medium of dance on film, many for the first time, themes range from childhood and relationships gained and lost, to dreams and the joy of grooving to your favorite song. These films were inspired by many different sources such as the movement within biological processes, finding intimacy despite isolation, and dancing alone in your bedroom.

This year’s concert features a diverse range of movement styles including contemporary modern, tap, jazz, ballet, aerial, and street styles. Although COVID-19 brought limitations to the rehearsal process, the choreographers embraced the opportunity to step outside the box of making dances for a concert stage. The films were shot in various locales within the Greater Seattle area—Golden Gardens Park, Padelford Garage, an Everett pier, the Studio Theatre at Meany Hall for the Performing Arts—as well as Oklahoma City and San Diego.

2021 UW Dance Major Choreographers: Rose Amlin, Victoria Aukland, Ieva Bračiulytė, Emily Chen, Raquel Gordon, Ainsleigh Orwin, Megan Sellman, Brooke Thimmig and Alyssa Vacheron.

While following COVID-19 protocols and safety guidelines means that UW Dance concerts will look different this year, our faculty and students have been no less active in creating new work. We’re thrilled to be able to share these performances with you directly to your living room!

About the University of Washington Department of Dance

The UW Department of Dance works to educate performers, educators, arts advocates, and cultural leaders. Through classes in theory, practice, and creativity, the department is able to instill a great respect for the arts. With the help of the amazing faculty, graduates and crew, the Dance Majors Concert is able to grow each year. This concert helps to connect and expand the dance community in Greater Seattle.

Through the completion of the UW Dance Department composition series, these dance majors are able to compile their practice into the works presented in the concert, training to find their voices within the dance community.
