Artistic Director, Janet Eilber |
SeattleDances was able to speak with Martha Graham Dance Company Director, Janet Eilber, after the company’s time in Seattle last week.
“We had a wonderful stay in Seattle. [There is] obviously a big, well-informed dance audience there. Our performances were really well received.”
Since taking over the company in 2005, Eilber’s direction has focused on creating new forms of audience access to the Martha Graham masterworks through contextual programming, educational and community partnerships, use of new media, and commissions and creative events. The former principal Graham dancer spoke of her new format:
“Our contextual programming–multimedia and narrated–has been very popular with all types of audiences. It’s very gratifying, especially since when we started doing this, it raised a few eyebrows.”
The Martha Graham Dance Company performed at Meany Hall as part of the UW World Series November 4 – 6, 2010. With full audiences and strong reviews, Seattle proved that it loves its dance.
“We hope to be back soon…”
Ms. Eilber, Seattle will gladly have you back in a heartbeat!
