As an artist, I aim to create worlds of movement and mixed media that are full of visceral texture, abstract thought, and vivid musicality following melodic and rhythmic detours in my bones. I hope to create a space of exploration, curiosity, thoughtfulness, beauty, and expansive collaboration between myself, artists I work with, and people who view my work.RON SMITH | Artist Statement
My work is deeply rooted in the integration of traditional dance forms and the endless potential of the contemporary landscape. At its core, my artistry seeks to connect and resonate in an age where both the tangible and intangible intertwine in our daily experiences. During my time at foundry10, the pandemic emphasized the significance of infusing dance with modern tools and perspectives, showcasing that while our methods may evolve, the essence of dance remains a powerful medium of expression. Teaching through dance is equally important to me. Dance is a powerful tool for building self-awareness, discipline, and a connection to our shared experiences. In the classroom setting, I aim to foster a space where students are encouraged to explore, innovate, and genuinely express themselves. Central to my artistic philosophy is the commitment to inclusivity and representation. Through my diverse collaborations and experiences, I have solidified my dedication to ensuring the dance community in Seattle and the PNW is inclusive and diverse. Elevating marginalized voices, especially those from the black queer community, is paramount in my work.
MARGAUX GEX & LAEL BATTISTE | Artist Statement
I am deeply passionate about movement and the infinite ways the body can move. Dance can allow people to experience life within their bodies. I love the exploration of sensation through effort and conscious work. I draw inspiration from nature, human interactions, social issues and anything that surrounds me. I want to push the boundaries of what makes dance visceral because I believe authenticity and full commitment are what make dance beautiful, which is essential to art and life. As a creative artist I find it crucial to push the limits of physicality, and performance. Innovation and uniqueness define the aesthetic principles of a quality dance world and every single dance artist has the responsibility to constantly refine these notions.
