The Art of Seafaring
April 29, 2022 @ 7:00 pm
In this new evening length work, Associate Artistic Director Madeleine Gregor choreographs her first work for Coriolis Dance, The Art of Seafaring. Co-directed by Madeleine Gregor and Lauren Hlubny, this work spans both dance, and theater. With poetry by H.D. (Hilda Doolittle), the work plunges you into a fantastical world, stranded in the ocean, cursed to be lost at sea. Watch as the crew of five women grapple with the twists and turmoils of their situation, find comfort in community, and cling to the hope of returning home.
The Art of Seafaring deftly weaves illustrative poetry, ballet tropes, contemporary movement, and theater into a work that is uniquely personal to all. In a monthly ritual spurred by the full moon, the crew details their journey through heartbreaking solos, passionately spoken poetry, intimate tableaus, and large group dances that ebb and flow like tides. In the center of the ship hangs an installation piece created by Port Townsend artist Tininha Silva. Beautifully weaving traditional sailing rope, hand dyed sari silk, jute, and items found on the beach such as dried seaweed, barnacles, and driftwood; the installation is a visual representation of the trials and tribulations the ship has undergone since setting sail.
