Seattle-based physical theatre company – VERBOOOM – is excited to announce their summer debut event, URGE
Verbooom will present three new short plays from local Seattle playwrights: Montse Garza, Alina Rios, and Miriam Tobin. All three plays are connected by a single thread and shot through with music, movement, longing, and hope. This uniquely theatrical experience transforms the intimate space of the Jewelbox Theatre into a whole world.

Verbooom is led by Artistic Director Alina Rios. As a playwright who writes through exploring the body and movement, Alina’s directing style leans on building emotionally truthful moments through movement, gesture, bodily expression, and breath. Language is a powerful tool, and in URGE, you will be immersed in rich, curious, highly dramatic language. Equally though, the ensemble touches on emotional truths through playful and poignant movement work. Alina trained with Frantic Assembly (UK) and their style inspires Verbooom’s approach to theatremaking. We believe in creating physical theatre for all bodies. Associate Director, Chris Harris, brings his photography skills to the creation of visually dynamic scenes and to documenting the work of this emerging company. Sound Designer Erin Slomski-Pritz (NPR, Jack Straw New Media Gallery Artist 2022-2023) has collaborated with Alina Rios in creating the enveloping soundscape. Natalie Grant’s (The Foundry, Alex Ketley) movement direction is precise and deliberate.

URGE was born out of an urgent need to create an experience that spotlights the synergy between our love for language and movement in storytelling.
The cast of URGE includes: Montse Garza (Passage, Strawberry Jam Directors Festival), Natalie Grant (Dragonslayer, AnA Collaborations), Adriana Hillas (Dream Hou$e, Washington Ensemble Theatre), and Elijah Spreier (Georgiana & Kitty, Taproot Theatre).

As the show begins, the audience is greeted by a voice–sometimes a friend, sometimes Puck–that guides them through. The ensemble slips into different characters as we enter and leave distinct stories and places, in a dream-like, sometimes absurd world, with real sorrow pulsing underneath, URGEntly.
