SUMMARY:Sagimai: Heron Siege Peace Procession
DESCRIPTION:Kubota Gardens and Kintsugi Somatic Art Present\nSagimai – Heron Siege Peace Procession\nAugust 30\, Noon\nAdmission: FREE\nKubota Garden\, 9817 55th Ave S\, Seattle\, WA 98118 \nInspired by the thousand year old Japanese tradition of Sagimai (heron dance)\, Kintsugi Somatic Art\n(KSA) will present their “Heron Siege Peace Procession on Saturday\, August 30 at noon. Sagimai is\na Shinto ritual for peace still performed at temples in Tokyo today. For KSA’s procession\, the\n“temple” will be the glorious sanctuary of Kubota Garden. KSA’s dance ritual is informed by cellular\nbiology\, gestural movement\, somatics\, and improvisational play while honoring the traditional\nexpression. The dance will open Kubota Garden’s annual Summer of Thunder: Taiko in the Garden\nevent.\nSince 2025\, choreographer and KSA founder/director\, Leah Okamoto Mann\, has staged numerous\nHeron Siege Peace Processions at events such as Vashon Strawberry Festival\, Kizoku Ishiki Obon\,\nHiroshima 2 Hope\, Open Air Festival (Vashon)\, Tacoma Museum of History and Industry\, and the\nBeam Theater (Atl). The processions are contemplative action with a physicalized intention of\npeace. They are a means of compassionate communal engagement amid violence and warfare here\nand abroad. A siege is the name for a flock of herons. It is also defined as a persistent force toward\na goal. The heron is a symbol of perseverance and inner calm.\nWe invite community to join in this collective action as a “human murmuration”. A murmuration is a\nflocking formation utilized by starlings and other non predatory birds to become greater than the\nsum of the parts for survival.. For the procession at Kubota\, the hope is to amplify the “murmur” of\npeace.\nDancers include: Dana Lupton\, Grace Matsuoka\, Zahra Matsuoka\, Andrea Braganza\, Naon\nFoongfuang\, Sheli Potmesil\, Elizabeth Mendana Shaw\, and Leah Okamoto Mann. Koto no WA will\nplay live accompaniment. Wings and head pieces were designed by visual artist\, Chantal Uto.\nAudience members will have the option to walk in a guided procession on an accessible path or a\nlonger path with moderate inclines to get to the Terrace and pond overlook. Audience members\nshould assemble at the front gate at noon. In all cases appropriate walking shoes are suggested.\nFunders for this project include Seattle Office of Arts and Culture\, 4Culture for the Arts\, Wild Woods\nFoundation\, Abundant Blessings Fund\, and Kubota Garden Foundation.\nFollowing the Heron Siege Peace Procession\, taiko performances will begin. Audience members are\nencouraged to stay for this uplifting and energizing annual community event. Find details here:\nhttps://www.kubotagarden.org/event-details/summer-thunder-taiko-in-the-garden

DESCRIPTION:A post-western Butoh dance work and ritual of release\, transformation\, and embodied presence. \nPerformed and co-choreographed by Sheri Brown in collaboration with Raphael Laigo\, Anchor in the Field (of Becoming) ravels the body through memory\, identity\, and inherited belief systems — thread by thread\, gesture by gesture. \nThe work blends Butoh\, sound\, visual art\, historical research\, light\, and space into an immersive performance environment. \nStillness\, rupture\, and renewal moves the body toward an eventual liberation born not from escape\, but from trust and transformation. SUMMARY:SFD+I: ISHMAEL HOUSTON-JONES + KEITH HENNESSEY
DESCRIPTION:Closer\, with music by jose e. abad\nAn improvised performance by Ishmael Houston-Jones (NY) and Keith Hennessy (SF) with live sound by jose e. abad \nIshmael and Keith first collaborated in the mid-90s and have continued for 25 years a deep conversation about art\, collaboration\, improvisation\, race\, activism\, sex\, dance\, history and futures. When they dance together\, the conversation and research continues. Sometimes we fight\, but there is always love. There will be questions\, there will be answers\, and much of the rest is unknown… \nKeith and jose have been in collaboration on multiple performance\, curation\, and teaching projects since 2016 and together have worked with Ishmael in the TRY project since 2020. Our relationships to each other\, to performing improvisation\, and to the worlds around us are the content of the work.

SUMMARY:Planetary Dance
DESCRIPTION:Planetary Dance and Potluck\nThursday\, August 6\, 2026 | 2:00pm-6:00pm\nFreeway Park – Seneca Plaza \nDance Artist\, Educator and Tamalpa Practitioner Lucie Baker will lead a group through Anna Halprin’s noted Planetary Dance community ritual. A Planetary Dance is a participatory ritual of healing and community renewal created in 1981 by legendary dance pioneer Anna Halprin. Designed as a dance for peace\, it invites people of all ages and abilities to walk\, run\, or stand in concentric circles around a central group of drummers to create a moving mandala. The dance is rooted in engaged community activism and offers an opportunity to process grief\, celebrate resilience\, and dedicate one’s movement to a personal or global cause. After the dance\, you can break bread with your neighbors at the potluck.
