SUMMARY:BASE + RADAR: Featuring Alex Tatarsky
DESCRIPTION:Base partners with Under the Radar Festival to create a new residency that brings Alex Tatarsky to Seattle. Three showings April 10 + 11! \nBase\, in partnership with Under the Radar Festival\, is pleased to announce BASE + RADAR! This new residency initiative brings renowned artist Alex Tatarsky to Seattle for an immersive two-week development process in April 2026\, advancing Alex’s latest project and culminating in public showings at Base on April 10–11. \nAbout Alex Tatarsky\nCalled “a hilarious\, finely tuned absurdist” (Theatre Jones) and “one of the most exciting and hilarious performance artists around\,” (Artspace) Alex Tatarsky makes performances in the unfortunate in-between zone of comedy\, performance art\, dance\, theater\, and deluded rant – sometimes with songs. Sad Boys in Harpy Land\, their spiraling clown play about wanting to die\, enjoyed a sold-out double extended run Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons and was named “Best of 2023” by the New York Times\, New Yorker and ArtForum. They are currently touring Dirt Trip (MoMA PS1)\, a decomposing lecture-performance on fear of clowns and fear of compost\, to community composting sites around the country\, and were a featured artist in the 2024 Whitney Biennial. Along with artist Ming Lin\, Tatarsky is one half of the roving poetic research unit Shanzhai Lyric and its fictional office Canal Street Research Association. \nAbout BASE + RADAR\nThis new\, collaborative residency model is designed to give artists an opportunity to develop work in an immersive\, supportive environment while engaging a new community in the work’s evolution. In this inaugural edition\, Tatarsky will experiment with a new piece\, working with long-time collaborators Shane Riley (sound)\, Andreea Mincic (scenic\, costumes) and Iris McCloughan (co-direction\, dramaturgy) as well as a rotating cast of local Seattle-based outside eyes. Tatarsky and collaborators will have 24/7 access to Base and the chance to share their work in two public showings. The residency allows Tatarsky to experiment and refine this work-in-progress in real time prior to its premiere at Under the Radar. \nAbout Base’s 25-26 Pilot Programs\nMade possible through the community support of our Flourish campaign\, our 2025-26 pilot programs\, BASE + RADAR\, Jump / Cut: The Moving Body On Screen\, and Pairings: Collaborations in Movement and Music\, aim to create more space for the making and experiencing of experimental\, multidisciplinary art. Arising organically from conversations with members of the creative community in Seattle and nationally\, Base hopes these programmatic experiments provide compelling opportunities while filling a gap in the local arts landscape. Learn more about our pilot programs here. \nAbout Base\nBase is dedicated to elevating risk and invention in dance\, performance and multidisciplinary art. A space for developing and publicly sharing original work\, Base is committed to addressing experimental artists’ needs for time\, space\, creative freedom and critical discourse. Founded in 2015 by longtime Seattle artists and collaborators Dayna Hanson\, Peggy Piacenza and Dave Proscia\, Base aims to add vibrancy to 21st century art in Seattle and nationally by encouraging artists of all levels to take creative chances\, deepen their practices and share an ongoing flow of fresh\, original work and ideas. Learn more at thisisbase.org. \nSupport for Base\nNow in its second year\, Flourish is our first major fundraising campaign that leverages community support in order to grow and expand in response to local\, regional\, and national demand. Flourish is generating $300\,000 over three years to support three areas of growth: increased artist residencies\, a more robust staff\, and new\, community-facing programs. SUMMARY:for posterity: proof of free will
DESCRIPTION:created by Skye Hughes \nfor posterity: proof of free will is a speculative oral history—a performance staged as a panel discussion reflecting on the end of humanity. Panelists look back at a civilization and environment in collapse\, tracing the chain of events that began when humanity chose to stop reproducing and instead prepare for the last person’s death. \nThis is an exploration of peace in the face of existential crisis. As runaway climate change spiraled uncontrollably and humanity reached the brink of cataclysmic war\, undeniable questions arose: Do we continue? What if we just… stopped? \nThe project asks what happens if we stop resisting mortality—not just individually\, but on a global scale. Under this condition\, the discussion is forced to consider alternative meanings for sex\, existence\, and community\, opening space for new\, subversive questions. If not survival\, then what? If we were to turn off the engines of exploitation\, how would the trauma we carry and the damaged planet transform? How could we practice inter-species care\, care for the planet\, recognition of harm and attempt reparation on the largest possible scale? \nIn this world\, what did humanity ultimately achieve through designing its own end? \nFeaturing Serena Chopra\, Alyza DelPan-Monley\, HATLO\, Lío Sainz-Jones\, and Fox Whitney. \nMusic by scott farkas and Paulina Michels

Each dancer’s life experiences inform the\nmovement\, shaping unique textures and patterns within the choreography. Using\nguided meditation as a starting point\, the dancers generate material rooted in personal\nhistory\, which is then reshaped and reimagined to explore change\, resilience\, and\ncollective storytelling. \nMadeline Maxine Roman’s Blink of an Eye blends inspiration from time travel\, stop-\nmotion animation\, and paper textures to confront how life only moves forward.\nFeaturing an original live score by her wife and artistic collaborator\, Valentina Roman\,\nthe dancers move through moments that stretch endlessly\, collapse instantly\, and blur\ninto one another\, with time slipping through their bodies as it does our own. \nDiana Kim’s latest work asks if we are able to ever truly break free from the cycles of\nour trauma. Inspired by the phrase “I am not a violent dog\, I don't know why I bite” the\npiece flows through a journey of introspection becoming more nightmarish as layers are\nstripped away. The 10 dancer ensemble explores repetition\, time\, uniformity\, and\ncontrol to show that even in the act of attempting to break free from our past we may\nstill bring others down with us. “I bite because it is all I have ever known.” \nAs always\, Marlo Martin\, is most interested in the artists in the room and molds the\nwork around the specific individuals in the cast. She spends time witnessing and is\ngenuinely interested in each dancer’s energy\, their preferences as a mover\, and their\nwillingness to dive into work with vulnerability. Based on the human experience as she\nhas experienced Marlo weaves a wild tapestry of patterns\, highly physical movement\,\nand brave hearts. Martin’s “lingering” playfully and poetically examines patterns of\ninterpersonal and social dynamics within humankind. More specifically it is based on\nperception and the practices of assumption\, form identification\, and desensitization. \nOlivia Evans‘ latest work embodies the feeling of anticipation. This urge to imagine\nsomething over and over again\, trying to play out every possible scenario of how it\nmight go. And then\, when this imagined thing occurs\, it often turns out that feeling the\npre-emptive anticipation was far more effortful than the experience it built up to. What\nwas thought to be the climax ends up being anti-climactic. Repetition is a largely used\ntool in this piece\, and Olivia has challenged herself to devise a plethora of unique ways\nin which to utilize it. The piece will ebb and flow\, building up towards potential climaxes\nand then faltering short. Still in development\, an original score by local musician Paul\nStovall will enhance the movement ideas generated collaboratively between Olivia and\nher cast. \ndani tirrell’s work creates a world grounded in spiritual practice and draws from Black\nAmerican life and Black American movement practice\, using a sound and movement\nscore that includes gospel\, house\, and instrumental music. \nEvoke Productions is an Associated Program of Shunpike.

SUMMARY:Cadence Video Poetry Festival – you flew from my eyes
DESCRIPTION:Giving shape and voice to what’s felt but can’t always be seen\, touched\, or retrieved\, these video poems meditate on the marks we leave and with which we are left. Between earthly boundaries and open sky\, dances\, phone calls\, and a trampoline become buoys for self and other within the sea of time. \nThis showcase features “The Sky After Rain (Aseman Bad Az Baran)\,” a poetic screendance from Australia. Written after the arrest of his boyfriend during Iran’s 2009 Green Movement protests\, this soaring work is based on a poem by exiled Iranian poet\, Payam Feili. \nABOUT\nCadence Video Poetry is a literary media organization hosting year-round screenings\, an artist residency\, workshops\, and artist gatherings to nurture creative community through video poetry.

SUMMARY:Cadence Video Poetry Festival – the gaps in me
DESCRIPTION:What lies beyond the watery weight of a body? Do mirrors reflect the dusty light of truth? Part ghost story\, part performance art\, and part art object\, these video poems forsake flesh and revel in repetition. Emerging from the sand and slime of our collective grief\, they reveal the shared realities of loss and persistence\, as told through sutures\, similes\, and mise-en-scènes. \n \nThis showcase features two poetic screendances: \n“All ways.” from the US \nYou could not have tried any harder. \n“Blessed Are Those Who Grieve” from Germany \nA slice of an inner\, surreal landscape of grief. Melting somatic work\, multilayered soundscapes\, and digital spheres\, the film explores a hybridity of mourning through the birth of a creature pushing towards the reconciliation of a collective grief. \n \nABOUT \nCadence Video Poetry is a literary media organization hosting year-round screenings\, an artist residency\, workshops\, and artist gatherings to nurture creative community through video poetry. \n \nEvent Date & Time: April 18\, 4-6pm

SUMMARY:Cadence Video Poetry Festival – a sculpture of echoes
DESCRIPTION:Vegetal time meets time travel\, demonstrating the subtle ways in which we are interconnected and influenced by our environments. Urban infrastructure defines new habitats\, the hand that feeds nourishes a new intimacy\, and a surreal spell brings new life into being. Creation myth\, memory\, humor\, and history combine in unexpected ways as these video poems ask: Is it cake? Or is it chaos? \nThis showcase features two poetic screendances: \n“Reach” from the US \nAt the crossroads of intimacy\, trails of invisible energy imprint as two wanderers maneuver throughout the landscape\, leaving hints of mirrored action yet inverted perspective. Through the shifting shape\, current\, and conduit of water\, “Reach” follows the journey of two people in search of the other. \n“WE’VE WORKED SO MUCH (ABBIAMO LAVORATO TANTO)” from Italy \nThrough a visual poem of words\, dance\, and matters\, the colossal forms of cement mixers in a deserted factory become transformative spaces. The notion of labor and motherhood is redefined through these looming metallic bodies of resonance—concrete mixers treated as productive organs\, sites of a life’s work. \nABOUT \nCadence Video Poetry is a literary media organization hosting year-round screenings\, an artist residency\, workshops\, and artist gatherings to nurture creative community through video poetry. \n \nEvent Date & Time: April 18\, 7-9pm

SUMMARY:Cadence Video Poetry Festival – proof that we were here
DESCRIPTION:Inventing realities not as escapism but as determinism\, these video poems perfect the alchemy of dreaming. A love story emerges out of the polluted atmosphere\, plant life blooms into a collage of words\, and ice melts into a procedural poem. Through new channels of communication with nature\, these shapeshifting films prove that the key to providing a sustainable future is protecting the past. \nThis showcase features a poetic screendance: “People Mountain People Sea” from China. The scales of carbon-based life are out of balance. We are ‘losing’ each other just as we are ‘losing’ our bodies. This film explores the dynamic equilibrium of the Five Elements in Taoism—Water\, Wood\, Fire\, Earth\, and Metal—alongside three sets of balance between disease and health\, war and peace\, rationality and emotion. \nABOUT \nCadence Video Poetry is a literary media organization hosting year-round screenings\, an artist residency\, workshops\, and artist gatherings to nurture creative community through video poetry. \nEvent Date & Time: April 19\, 4-6pm

SUMMARY:Cadence Video Poetry Festival – an imperceptible mark
DESCRIPTION:Tracing a multilingual lineage through the condensation of our collective memory\, this showcase peers into the abstract spaces of female poets. A feature-length video poem and an accompanying screendance expand our understanding of mother tongue and of presence\, even in absence. Have we forgotten what the women before us bore\, broke\, and buried to survive? A chorus of layered voices invites us to remember. \nThis showcase features a poetic screendance: “Ausencia (Absence)” from Mexico. In a place woven with memories\, absence is invoked only to be recognized as something filled with presence. \nABOUT \nCadence Video Poetry is a literary media organization hosting year-round screenings\, an artist residency\, workshops\, and artist gatherings to nurture creative community through video poetry. \nEvent Date & Time: April 19\, 6:30-8pm
