SUMMARY:Spectrum Dance Theater: Resilience
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Music of Remembrance \nIn the spring\, Spectrum renews its collaboration with Music of Remembrance\, returning to the music of Erwin Schulhoff. This collaboration also represents a return to a composer whose work has long held a particular significance for Donald Byrd. First encountering Schulhoff’s music during a Music of Remembrance performance of the Duo for Violin and Cello\, Byrd was captivated by both the composer’s extraordinary imagination and the devastating historical reality of a brilliant artistic voice silenced by the Holocaust. The collaboration continues Spectrum’s ongoing dialogue with memory\, history\, and the enduring capacity of art to bear witness.

SUMMARY:PNB: DIRECTOR’S CHOICE
DESCRIPTION:Shake up your spring with electric new dance experiences! Back for the first time since its premiere in 2019\, Eva Stone’s elegant F O I L explores different sides of the human experience from Stone’s unique storytelling lens. Christopher Wheeldon’s This Bitter Earth is an emotionally striking pas de deux set to a poignant remix of Dinah Washington’s “This Bitter Earth” and Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight.” To close\, choreographer Kyle Abraham will bring his unique avant-garde aesthetic to PNB for the first time in a world premiere work.

SUMMARY:A Midsummer Night’s Dream
DESCRIPTION:A fanciful tale of love’s delusions and mishaps\, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream seems almost tailor-made for ballet. From the spritely fairy kingdom to the whirling lovers and a star-lit wedding\, George Balanchine’s adaptation of this classic tale would certainly be bard-approved. The Seattle Times calls PNB’s world-renowned production “a joy on every level.” Mendelssohn’s lush music combines with iconic storytelling and choreography to produce what dance writer Anita Finkel called “possibly the greatest narrative ballet of all time.”

SUMMARY:Kate Wallich & Perfume Genius
DESCRIPTION:Perfume Genius (Mike Hadreas) and choreographer Kate Wallich return to the stage with a new collaboration. \nCombining Perfume Genius’ experimental pop with Wallich’s choreographic lens\, The Lesson is a raw\, uncompromising performance work inspired by The Piano Teacher\, the notorious novel by Elfriede Jelinek\, famously adapted by Michael Haneke. \nThe Lesson examines what happens when desire has nowhere to go\, and what we’re rehearsing when we practice “good behavior”. The work moves through repression\, longing\, authority\, and submission in unstable scenes where roles shift\, and the unsaid becomes manically physical.
