SUMMARY:The Harsh Art of Unanchoring
DESCRIPTION:Equipoise Dance returns with its Season 2 concert\, “The Harsh Art of Unanchoring” — an evening of contemporary dance rooted in authentic human connection\, reflection\, and shared physical inquiry. \nPerformed by company artists Anneka Parr\, Bethany Lynch\, Emma Neilson\, Lauran Drackett\, and Melissa Koh Krienke\, this program emerges from a journey into the subconscious\, asking: What are we carrying that no longer serves us? What holds us in place\, limiting forward motion? And what might become possible if we loosen our grip — allowing weight to lift\, shift\, or fall away entirely? These questions are embodied through distinct movement voices\, each dancer drawing from personal experience — informing both an intimate duet performed by directors Heather Smith and Samantha Weissbach and the full-company work “and there I was”. \nBetween these works sits “Hi\, I’m a mother”\, a piece shaped through the lived experience of six dynamic guest artists\, each sharing intimate realities of their relationship with motherhood and how it reshapes identity\, purpose\, and the body at its core. \n“The Harsh Art of Unanchoring” invites audiences into an immersive evening of movement and storytelling — where powerful physicality\, shared vulnerability\, and moments of release offer both an engaging performance and space for personal reflection.

SUMMARY:Echoes of Conscience
DESCRIPTION:Voices of the French resistance\nConcert Highlights: The spirit of Josephine Baker with chanteuse Jacqueline Tabor \nWorld Premiere Dance Commission\nDarius Milhaud\, La création du monde\nDonald Byrd\, Spectrum Dance Theater\n\n\nDarius Milhaud’s La Création du Monde was inspired by the composer’s trip to Harlem. For this daring ballet work\, he drew on a blend of jazz and classical idioms to imagine the creation of the world according to African myths. Few details remain of the original choreography\, but Music of Remembrance has commissioned Spectrum Dance Theater’s award-winning Donald Byrd to create a new dance score for this captivating work that evokes the experimental aura of Paris in the 1920s.\n  \nMilhaud was part of “Les Six\,” a group of six young French composers who shared a reaction to stylistic conventions of their day\, and sought clarity\, wit\, and modernity in their music. Several of them were active in the French resistance under Nazi occupation\, and our program features songs in which they and others dared to set eloquent poetic words of protest by banned authors like Louis Aragon and Paul Éluard. \nFew artists have fused art and activism as powerfully as Josephine Baker\, the legendary singer and dancer who escaped racism in America to become an icon of resistance and freedom in France. We feature chanteuse Jacqueline Tabor in a medley of songs that Baker made famous – songs of love\, liberty and an unshakable spirit. \nFeaturing:\nSpectrum Dance Theater \nGuest Artists:\nMichael Brockman\, saxophone\nJacqueline Tabor\, chanteuse\nOsama Afifi\, double bass\nJohn Hansen\, piano\nRosamund Dyer\, mezzo-soprano \n2025 David Tonkonogui Memorial Award recipient:\nTom Wang\, clarinet \nMusic of Remembrance Ensemble:\nLaura DeLuca\, clarinet; Mikhail Shmidt\, violin; Natasha Bazhanov\, violin\nSusan Gulkis Assadi\, viola; Walter Gray\, cello; Cristina Valdes\, piano

SUMMARY:PNB Ballet School: Momotaro
DESCRIPTION:Pacific Northwest Ballet is proud to present the world premiere of Jessica Lang’s Momotaro\, the newest addition to PNB’s series of narrated\, one-hour family-friendly ballets performed by students of the PNB School and designed especially for young audiences. (Momotaro does not feature PNB Company dancers.) Momotaro runs for three performances only\, March 21 and 28\, at Seattle Center’s Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. For tickets and information\, call the PNB Box Office at 206.441.2424\, or visit PNB.org. \n\nMomotaro (The Peach Boy) is considered Japan’s oldest folk tale. It was first written around the Edo period (1603-1868) but is thought to have been passed down for centuries before then\, with many different versions over time. PNB’s version of Momotaro\, adapted by Jessica Lang and Kanji Segawa\, brings this captivating tale to the ballet stage with a focus on themes of courage\, forgiveness\, and the power of family and friends. It tells the story of a boy who springs to life from a giant peach\, to the delight of the elderly couple who have longed for a child of their own. Momotaro eventually goes on a hero’s quest to find the ogres who have stolen from his family and neighbors. Along the way he befriends a dog\, a pheasant\, and a monkey who help him defeat the ogres and return the stolen treasures to their rightful homes. \n\nSensory-friendly Performance of Momotaro \nPNB is proud to present an inclusive\, sensory-friendly performance of Momotaro on Saturday\, March 28 at 12:30 pm. This performance will feature a supportive and welcoming environment so children and adults affected by autism or with other sensory needs can enjoy the shared experience of live ballet with their friends and family. Modified lighting and sound levels\, fidgets\, entry/exit privileges\, trained staff\, allowance of devices\, touch stations\, and a quiet room will be offered at this matinee. For more information on sensory-friendly performances visit PNB.org/accessibility. \n\nMomotaro Community Day \nPNB celebrates Japanese and Japanese American art\, dance\, and culture\, with a FREE\, interactive\, and family-friendly Momotaro Community Day on Saturday\, March 28 from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. The event will include performances\, an artists’ market\, collaborative art and craft stations\, a panel discussion\, and more for the community and Momotaro ticketholders to enjoy before and between the performances. For details and more information\, visit PNB.org/blog/get-ready-for-momotaro-at-pnb.

SUMMARY:Base Residency Entry Point: Juliana F. May
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Saturday\, March 21\, at 4 PM for NYC-based Choreographer Juliana F. May’s Entry Point! \nFacilitated by Dayna Hanson\, join Choreographer Juliana F. May and dramaturg Hilary Clark for a conversation about their working relationship over the last ten years as they reflect on their last piece\, Optimistic Voices\, and begin to think and envision May’s next work\, “Dreams part III”. \nA Guggenheim and New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow\, Juliana F. May has intertwined practices of choreography and teaching. Since 2002\, her work has been presented by Dance Theater Workshop\, New York Live Arts\, The Chocolate Factory Theater\, Brooklyn Academy of Music\, Joyce SoHo\, The American Realness Festival and Abrons Arts Center\, among others. May has been awarded grants and residencies through The Map Fund\, The Jerome Foundation\, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, Foundation for Contemporary Art\, The Brooklyn Arts Council and New York State Council on the Arts. In 2002\, May received her BA in Dance and Art History from Oberlin College\, and\, in 2012\, she received an MFA in Choreography from the University Wisconsin-Milwaukee. May serves as the Artistic Advisor for New York Live Arts’ Fresh Tracks Residency Program and has been on faculty at Sarah Lawrence College since 2017. May’s work “Folk Incest” was nominated for a 2019 New York Dance and Performance Award for outstanding production\, and toured to ImpulsTanz in Vienna\, Austria. In 2025\, May received the Sam Miller Award for performance from LMCC and was the Caroline Hearst artist-in-residence at Princeton University. In November 2025\, May premiered “Optimistic Voices” at BAM Next Wave Festival\, where she was also named the Harkness Artist-in residence for BAM Fisher. In 2026\, May will reprise Optimistic Voices at the Chocolate Factory Theater and MCA Chicago\, among other national tours. \nAbout Entry Points: Entry Points are opportunities for our Resident artists to share their process. They may take the form of a showing\, a conversation\, or another expression of the artist’s imagination. It’s an opportunity for the community to engage with the deep dives the artists undertook during their Residency and\, possibly\, discover a new artist or deepen their connection to an artist they support. \nAbout the Base Residency: The Base Residency is a unique\, artist-curated program offering unrestricted space\, the opportunity to publicly share work\, technical\, marketing\, and administrative support\, travel and lodging for out-of-town artists\, and a fee of $1\,000 per residency week. The ‘25-’26 Residency Season was curated by Parisa Ghaderi\, Joseph Hernandez\, and Keyes Wiley. This year\, the Base Residency offers six artists—three from the Seattle area and three from beyond—two weeks of immersive creative time at Base between January and July 2026. Since 2016\, more than 30 artists have completed Base Residencies as the program continues to evolve and grow within a national context. Meet Base Residency Alumni here. \n“The Base Artist Residency was crucial to the development of RoCoCoCoCo and indeed\, my continued evolution as a creative artist. Having time and space to live in the questions of my work\, to listen to my body\, and to be in conversation with my dancing collaborators teaches me. Base offered me enough time to let the ideas establish themselves. This generosity feels like trust – like the institution/Base trusts the artists\, and this allows the artists to trust the art/themselves.”

April 4\, 2 PM · four and a half hours (with intermission and shared refreshments) | The Symphony | The Cast \nSince 1995\, Heather Kravas has investigated choreographic\, somatic\, and collaborative practices in contemporary dance to explore the edges of performance. For Made in Seattle\, she offers RoCoCoCoCo—an evolving cycle of four dances\, shared across four evenings and culminating in two full-length presentations of the complete work. \nImagined as a DIY folk dance that turns into a snowflake\, fractals into a vortex\, veers into a grocery list\, emanates like an aura\, aligns like a pinball machine\, and collaborates like an ant colony\, RoCoCoCoCo slips beyond classification. \nInstead\, it proposes a new structure for performance—one that holds dancers and audiences alike in states of heightened attention\, curiosity\, and desire. Guided by the somatic dramaturgy of longtime collaborator Rebecca Brooks\, RoCoCoCoCo is created for Allie Hankins\, Carlin Kramer\, Amanda Morgan\, Symone Sanz\, Sylvia Schatz-Allison\, and Julia Sloane. The work traces the layered effort of dancing together—energetic\, rhythmic\, precise\, and tender. It invites us to sense how intimacy scales\, how perception expands\, and how dancing itself becomes a site for both clarity and complexity—a space of shared and essential presence. \nRoCoCoCoCo takes place in the black box of 12th Avenue Arts\, with spectators seated on three sides of the stage. The dancers share the space with two pianists performing Terry Riley’s Keyboard Study No. 1 on upright pianos bound back-to-back. The live sounds of the theater—breath\, footsteps\, resonance—are at times amplified\, at times overtaken by electric music. Lighting\, designed by longtime collaborator Madeline Best\, shifts\, echoing the slow transformations of daylight in nature. \nAudiences are invited to experience RoCoCoCoCo in many ways: as singular performances that stand on their own; as a sequence unfolding across several days; or as the complete work\, gathered in the final two evenings.

SUMMARY:Amy O'Neal: Again\, There Is No Other (The Remix)
DESCRIPTION:A ritual of femme power and connection rooted in two decades of research and participation in street and contemporary dance cultures.\nAgain\, There Is No Other (The Remix) is a dark and joyful ritual merging street dance forms and contemporary dance. The work interrogates fear of the Feminine in patriarchal culture\, asking: If perceptions of race and gender are inseparable\, can we be a post-gender society when we are far from a post-race society? \nThrough hybridizing the nightclub\, the cypher (the circle)\, and the theater\, five physically multilingual\, femme-identified dancers explore touch\, support\, the imperative of connection\, the tensions of identity\, and the embrace of difference.
