SUMMARY:CO-PRESENTS: TRICK | Carlin x PITH
DESCRIPTION:a split-bill evening of performance by Carlin Kramer & PITH (Alissa Pegram and Caroline Maxwell)\nCO-PRESENTS features artists you’ve seen previously in CO- programming\, giving our growing CO- family the opportunity to expand upon or deepen work they may have started while in our orbit. We’re proud to announce that the third iteration of CO-PRESENTS features Carlin Kramer of SHOW2 and PITH (Caroline Maxwell + Alissa Pegram) of SHOW10. \nThrough CO-PRESENTS\, two Seattle-based artists are granted a 40-hour residency with competitive hourly rehearsal wages and two fully produced\, split-bill performances. This has been a step up in CO-‘s programming that further fosters growth for independent Seattle-based dance artists. CO-PRESENTS is our answer to a community need for opportunities to present longer-form\, more fully supported work.

SUMMARY:Cadence Video Poetry Festival – the gaps in me
DESCRIPTION:What lies beyond the watery weight of a body? Do mirrors reflect the dusty light of truth? Part ghost story\, part performance art\, and part art object\, these video poems forsake flesh and revel in repetition. Emerging from the sand and slime of our collective grief\, they reveal the shared realities of loss and persistence\, as told through sutures\, similes\, and mise-en-scènes. \n  \nThis showcase features two poetic screendances: \n“All ways.” from the US \nYou could not have tried any harder. \n“Blessed Are Those Who Grieve” from Germany \nA slice of an inner\, surreal landscape of grief. Melting somatic work\, multilayered soundscapes\, and digital spheres\, the film explores a hybridity of mourning through the birth of a creature pushing towards the reconciliation of a collective grief. \n  \nABOUT \nCadence Video Poetry is a literary media organization hosting year-round screenings\, an artist residency\, workshops\, and artist gatherings to nurture creative community through video poetry. \n  \nEvent Date & Time: April 18\, 4-6pm

SUMMARY:Cadence Video Poetry Festival – a sculpture of echoes
DESCRIPTION:Vegetal time meets time travel\, demonstrating the subtle ways in which we are interconnected and influenced by our environments. Urban infrastructure defines new habitats\, the hand that feeds nourishes a new intimacy\, and a surreal spell brings new life into being. Creation myth\, memory\, humor\, and history combine in unexpected ways as these video poems ask: Is it cake? Or is it chaos? \nThis showcase features two poetic screendances:  \n“Reach” from the US \nAt the crossroads of intimacy\, trails of invisible energy imprint as two wanderers maneuver throughout the landscape\, leaving hints of mirrored action yet inverted perspective. Through the shifting shape\, current\, and conduit of water\, “Reach” follows the journey of two people in search of the other. \n“WE’VE WORKED SO MUCH (ABBIAMO LAVORATO TANTO)” from Italy \nThrough a visual poem of words\, dance\, and matters\, the colossal forms of cement mixers in a deserted factory become transformative spaces. The notion of labor and motherhood is redefined through these looming metallic bodies of resonance—concrete mixers treated as productive organs\, sites of a life’s work. \nABOUT \nCadence Video Poetry is a literary media organization hosting year-round screenings\, an artist residency\, workshops\, and artist gatherings to nurture creative community through video poetry. \n  \nEvent Date & Time: April 18\, 7-9pm

SUMMARY:Cadence Video Poetry Festival – proof that we were here
DESCRIPTION:Inventing realities not as escapism but as determinism\, these video poems perfect the alchemy of dreaming. A love story emerges out of the polluted atmosphere\, plant life blooms into a collage of words\, and ice melts into a procedural poem. Through new channels of communication with nature\, these shapeshifting films prove that the key to providing a sustainable future is protecting the past. \nThis showcase features a poetic screendance: “People Mountain People Sea” from China. The scales of carbon-based life are out of balance. We are ‘losing’ each other just as we are ‘losing’ our bodies. This film explores the dynamic equilibrium of the Five Elements in Taoism—Water\, Wood\, Fire\, Earth\, and Metal—alongside three sets of balance between disease and health\, war and peace\, rationality and emotion. \nABOUT \nCadence Video Poetry is a literary media organization hosting year-round screenings\, an artist residency\, workshops\, and artist gatherings to nurture creative community through video poetry. \nEvent Date & Time: April 19\, 4-6pm

SUMMARY:Cadence Video Poetry Festival – an imperceptible mark
DESCRIPTION:Tracing a multilingual lineage through the condensation of our collective memory\, this showcase peers into the abstract spaces of female poets. A feature-length video poem and an accompanying screendance expand our understanding of mother tongue and of presence\, even in absence. Have we forgotten what the women before us bore\, broke\, and buried to survive? A chorus of layered voices invites us to remember. \nThis showcase features a poetic screendance: “Ausencia (Absence)” from Mexico. In a place woven with memories\, absence is invoked only to be recognized as something filled with presence. \nABOUT \nCadence Video Poetry is a literary media organization hosting year-round screenings\, an artist residency\, workshops\, and artist gatherings to nurture creative community through video poetry. \nEvent Date & Time: April 19\, 6:30-8pm

SUMMARY:Dance Theatre Seattle: rep two
DESCRIPTION:Dance Theatre Seattle has been hard at work in the studios\, shaping rep two\, three ballets that reflect both where we have been and where we are going. The program brings a restaging of BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS\, alongside two world premieres: Coping Mechanisms and lowleveljoy. All three works are choreographed by Joshua Grant\, each one exploring a different facet of resilience\, memory\, and self-discovery. \nWe open the program with BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS. Born in the stillness of the pandemic\, when isolation sharpened our sense of self\, the work turns us toward the mirror. Toward the person standing there—and no one else. In that confrontation we find resolve. BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS erupts as a battle cry: fierce\, unapologetic\, unguarded. A declaration of power in standing firm. A call to trust the pulse of who we are at our most authentic. \nFrom there we enter Coping Mechanisms. Guided by eight of Paganini’s virtuosic 24 Caprices\, the music moves like a nervous system; alive with urgency\, instinct\, and momentum. Echoes of the stark “black-and-white” ballets of the 1940s through the 1970s flicker through the work: form stripped bare\, emotion laid open. We pass through the landscapes of youth and memory—through angst\, ecstasy\, rebellion\, and yearning—drawing from what shaped us. What we once knew becomes a tool\, a language carried forward\, allowing us to confront the present and move through it. \nTo close the program\, lowleveljoy invites us inward. Here the journey is quieter\, more intimate. Movement becomes touch\, texture\, breath. A hand across space\, the weight of a body\, the steady rhythm of a heart beating within the dark. It is a meditation on loving oneself—on sensing rather than seeing. Because perhaps we never fully witness what unfolds in the moment. Perhaps we only recognize it afterward\, in the lingering sensation it leaves behind. \n—three works\, three worlds\, and a shared moment at Dance Theatre Seattle.

SUMMARY:Eleven:Eleven presents LOSING SLEEP
DESCRIPTION:What happens in silence when all you have to listen to is yourself? \nThis is the question that fueled the birth of Eleven:Eleven in January of 2024 through their opening work Piece One. Now\, Eleven:Eleven presents LOSING SLEEP–a culmination of work created over the past two and a half years. The creation of the group itself mirrors the essence of this upcoming project which highlights the serendipity that can occur through dedication to the self and the process of unknowing. \nLOSING SLEEP invites audience members into a world of insomnia. Through the wakefulness of night\, time slows down. Eventually\, clarity is found. Then\, an actualized self remembers a younger self: the smell of lake water drying on your skin\, the sound of geese migrating at the end of summer\, the scratch of a guitar. In the purgatory of twilight\, you meet yourself; 20 years ago\, 12 years ago\, 8 years ago\, last year\, today. \nReflections of oneself fold in on each other like standing between two mirrors. They emanate from the center of your chest and out into the universe in a never ending string of you. In an homage to coming of age\, Eleven:Eleven grasps the truth that the only way out is through the night. \nComposed of dancers Adri Polyak\, Natalie Bell\, Sierra Burnham\, Jenna Batchelder\, Diana Kim\, Janae Walla\, and director\, Callan Moore\, Eleven:Eleven’s magnetic magic emerges on account of the chemistry of these friends. After young years spent seeking\, hoping and sleeping restlessly\, this collective formed exactly when it was meant to. Informing their ethos: Right Place\, Right People\, Right Time.

SUMMARY:Fauxnique: How Do I Look?
DESCRIPTION:Fauxnique wields a provocative\, wry framework of drag\, dance\, and philosophy to confront identity\, femininity\, and self-image.\nHow Do I Look? is the latest work from Monique Jenkinson/Fauxnique\, the multifaceted artist\, choreographer\, writer\, and performer best known as the first cisgender woman anywhere\, ever to be crowned as a pageant-winning drag queen. With her rigorous ballet training buried in the bottom of her artistic toolbox\, Jenkinson emerged out of a feminist\, postmodern\, improvisational dance lineage and into the nightclub scene. There\, she fashioned Fauxnique in a laboratory of liberatory radical queer performance\, reclaiming ballet and learning to use drag and theory as modes of inquiry and entertainment. Jenkinson brings this fluency to this latest work. \nNow she dons her drag queen guise and wields her unique combination of precise physicality\, irreverent humor\, and gutsy vulnerability to ask the most vain\, mundane\, and loaded question: How Do I Look? With it\, she digs past glossy platitudes and flattering exaggerations into the hot mess of perception\, subjectivity\, identity\, and taste. How Do I Look? throws itself into the space—sometimes a chasm—between how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. As always\, Jenkinson’s work resists dogmatic answers and leans into philosophical modes of questioning\, considering the methodology of looking: by what means do we see the world and each other? By what means other than looking might we perceive each other\, art (especially works of art like this one)\, and the world? \nPart roast\, part dance\, part drag\, part stand-up\, part performance art\, this piece delves into an extreme close-up of the self. How Do I Look? poses a question that generates more questions—can I train myself to look without flinching\, without cringing? Can self-knowledge help me to know others? If I roast myself\, will you like me more? Is it even possible to roast myself? Do I really want to know?

This spring\, they return with new creations that push boundaries and invite reflection. \nRena Butler brings a new work following her powerful 2020 dance film\, “E=16-0163-TSX”\, originally created during the pandemic on our WHIM-IN platform. She describes her new work as an exploration of dissecting the self and our shared humanity – how breaking ourselves down reveals the ways we reflect and intersect with one another. Her choreography invites us into this humbling\, intricate process of self and communal discovery. \nJames Gregg\, who first captivated Whim W’Him audiences in 2016 with his duet “Into you I go willingly”\, returns to build on his bold and physical artistry. His latest creation promises the same intricate\, emotionally charged movement but elevated by a decade of research and exploration. \nArtistic Director Olivier Wevers offers a new creation that continues his ongoing investigation into human expression\, connection\, and transformation. His choreography continues to engage performers and audiences with meaningful queries and his ever-involving partnering exploration. \nJoin us for this powerful closing chapter of the season where dance becomes a space for reflection\, relationship\, and renewal.
