SUMMARY:Aubra and Evelyn: Current Bodies
DESCRIPTION:Current Bodies is a dance installation that melds visual art\, poetry\, and contemporary dance. The performance begins as an interactive installation: suspended fabrics featuring original paintings and poetry inspired by water create a layered landscape that audience members are encouraged to explore before the dancing begins. As the performance unfolds\, these fabrics transform into a dynamic\, ever-changing set for the dancers to move through. The choreography reflects water as both an intimate human metaphor and a powerful geologic force–shaping landscapes\, carrying stories\, and connecting lives across time. \nRun time: Approximately 45 minutes (including installation exploration and dance performance)

SUMMARY:Pile Up with HeapTroupe
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with performers: Alethea Alexander\, Leah Crosby\, Leo Othón\, Ben Swenson-Klatt \, The Pile-Up residency maps the space taken by car culture in the landscapes of cities and the psyches of its citizens. Within Freeway Park\, a wildlife crossing for humans bridging the arteries of I-5\, we will personify the Motordom and become infected by road rage\, congestion\, and car-brain; the symptoms that drive us Car Sick. \nAbout Heap Troupe: \nHeap Troupe is a Seattle-based interdisciplinary performance troupe that has been creating site-specific and interactive performances since 2019. Heap uses play and experimental theatrics to celebrate abundance\, while critiquing overconsumption. Inside the fantasy worlds they build\, Heap queers reductive ideas on bodily autonomy by drawing parallels between humans and objects; bicycles\, ladders\, oranges\, etc. This collaborative project is directed by movement artist Kara Beadle\, in collaboration with musician and handyman extraordinaire Andy Zacek\, and several rotating artists. Kara’s choreographic process uses character building tools from role-playing games and structured improvisation\, gearing their aesthetic to be easily approachable to non-dancers\, using humor and props to stimulate empathy. Andy uses parts\, hardware\, trash and junk to create the sets and costuming to further develop the fantasy worlds that these characters inhabit. \nHeap has performed in On The Boards Spectacle Spectacular\, Next Fest Northwest: Rupture/Reverence\, Texas Dance Improvisation Festival\, Co’s Show 5\, Space Station Dance Residency in St. Lewis\, the Walk Don’t Run Art Marathon\, Georgetown’s Art Attack\, The Shed’s Freeform Residency Showing\, The Flight Deck Residency Showing\, 18th and Union’s Portable Performance Festival\, Velocity Dance Center’s Fall Kick-off: Portals\, Launch\, TakePause\, and The Seattle International Dance Festival.

SUMMARY:Suitcase Dance Theatre Fundraiser and Preview
DESCRIPTION:In preparation for a third year at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, Seattle dance company Suitcase Dance Theatre will host a fundraiser and preview of their original show\, Allura. \nComing off a busy spring performing at Moisture Fest\, the Fremont Art Council’s Unreal Gala\, and Folklife\, Suitcase Dance Theatre is preparing once again to perform at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival. This year with a brand-new show conceived and choreographed by the company’s founder and director\, Veronica Mendonca. \nAllura is a captivating journey through a dreamy world where the seduction of shiny distractions is impossible to ignore. Performed by a multigenerational cast of nine dancers\, Allura incorporates rhythm and poetic monologue with Suitcase Dance Theatre’s signature blend of jazz\, tap\, ballet\, and contemporary dance styles. \nAmid the pandemic’s isolating grip\, Suitcase Dance Theatre formed out of a profound need to reconnect\, re-energize empty spaces and sustain the vital exchange of art within the Fremont community. The company transforms street corners\, window displays and other “everyday” pedestrian sites into vibrant hubs of artistic expression\, bringing art and human connection to unexpected places. Veronica Mendonca began her career at the Hong Kong Ballet. She has toured with the LA Opera and danced and choreographed for television and film. Veronica is the brains behind Fremont Fringe. Co-director Mark Mendonca has performed for three US presidents and on Broadway in the Tony Award–winning show Bring in ‘da Noise\, Bring in ‘da Funk. His dancing was motion captured for the animated film The Polar Express. The couple runs VAM Studios where Suitcase Dance Theatre is the resident dance company.

SUMMARY:Jade Solomon Curtis: Keeper of Sadness
DESCRIPTION:Keeper of Sadness is an immersive performance and living archive centering the experiences of Black Womxn.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe work brings together movement\, sound\, and storytelling to explore grief as something ancestral\, collective\, and deeply personal. It reflects on the intergenerational impacts of trauma\, societal narratives\, and historical erasure while holding space for memory\, resilience\, and reclamation. \nKeeper of Sadness invites audiences into a shared encounter with grief. Not as something to resolve\, but as something to witness\, carry\, transmute and understand on a deeper level. \n\nKeeper of Sadness offers an intimate exploration of the ways grief is carried\, remembered\, and passed on across generations. \nThrough performance and environment\, the work considers how Black life is shaped by forms of loss that are both visible and unseen. It holds space for experiences that are often carried but rarely named\, and asks what it means to witness them collectively. \nThe work draws attention to the ways memory\, erasure\, and survival are intertwined\, using storytelling as a site of remembrance and resistance.

SUMMARY:SFD+I: ISHMAEL HOUSTON-JONES + KEITH HENNESSEY
DESCRIPTION:Closer\, with music by jose e. abad\nAn improvised performance by Ishmael Houston-Jones (NY) and Keith Hennessy (SF) with live sound by jose e. abad \nIshmael and Keith first collaborated in the mid-90s and have continued for 25 years a deep conversation about art\, collaboration\, improvisation\, race\, activism\, sex\, dance\, history and futures. There will be questions\, there will be answers\, and much of the rest is unknown… \nKeith and jose have been in collaboration on multiple performance\, curation\, and teaching projects since 2016 and together have worked with Ishmael in the TRY project since 2020. Our relationships to each other\, to performing improvisation\, and to the worlds around us are the content of the work.

SUMMARY:KEEPING
DESCRIPTION:BLUE SCREEN invites you to experience KEEPING\, an evening length dance work that will happen at 12th Ave Arts. We want to spend this time with you because the dance we made is about you and it would make more sense if you were there. \nWe are excited to really lean in and get down to business (dance business). We hope that the experience is a little scary\, a little funny\, a little sad\, and mostly interesting. The art we make is the kind of art that keeps your experience in mind without being too clear about what any of it means. We try not to be condescending\, pretentious\, or difficult to understand\, though we are dancemakers so our hands are kind of tied. Uou can always tell us after if you feel like you need more information about all the stuff you’ve seen. \nThe important thing is that you show up because\, like we said above\, the dance is about you and it would be pretty weird if you weren’t there. \nFeaturing: \nNia-Amina Minor\nBarret Anspach*\nShane Donohue\nJoseph Hernandez** \n*Composer\n**Blue Screen is the organization of creatives helmed by choreographer Joseph Hernandez in collaboration with many of his loved ones.

SUMMARY:Anchor in the Field (of Becoming)
DESCRIPTION:A post-western Butoh dance work and ritual of release\, transformation\, and embodied presence. \nPerformed and co-choreographed by Sheri Brown in collaboration with Raphael Laigo\, Anchor in the Field (of Becoming) ravels the body through memory\, identity\, and inherited belief systems — thread by thread\, gesture by gesture. \nThe work blends Butoh\, sound\, visual art\, historical research\, light\, and space into an immersive performance environment. \nStillness\, rupture\, and renewal moves the body toward an eventual liberation born not from escape\, but from trust and transformation. Themes of debunked memories\, identity\, and liberation interweave with the poetic raveling of the “American suit\,” revealing a re-informed landscape inside the field of identity. \nCreative Team \n\nPerformed & Co-Choreographed by: Sheri Brown in collaboration with Raphael Laigo\nOriginal Paintings: Raphael Laigo\nMusic Co-Edited & Curated by: Raphael Laigo & Sheri Brown\nLive Music: Stephanie Wood\nSet Design: Sheri Brown & Raphael Laigo\n\nSpecial thanks to the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture — CityArtist Grant.
