SUMMARY:Eiko Otake & Wen Hui: What Is War
DESCRIPTION:Dance luminaries Wen Hui and Eiko Otake create a complex tapestry of language\, movement\, and video to share their personal memories related to war.\nWen Hui (b.1960) is Chinese and currently working in Europe. She grew up in China during the Cultural Revolution. Eiko Otake (b.1952) is Japanese and lives in New York. She grew up in post-war Japan. Both are female performers/choreographers\, and filmmakers. \nIn January 2020\, Eiko visited Wen Hui in China for a month. It was where the artists began examining the personal memories they hold in their bodies. The pandemic obliged the artists to continue their dialogue at a distance. The process of co-editing a feature-length documentary film\, No Rule Is Our Rule\, that documented their time together in China\, led them to work together physically in the U.S. to co-create this new performance work. During creative residencies at Duke University\, Colorado College\, and Mass MOCA\, the collaborators also uncovered and learned new knowledge about war that continues to affect them deeply. \nIn this project\, Wen Hui and Eiko Otake create a complex tapestry of language\, movement\, and video to share their personal memories related to war. As they move together\, their bodies intimately support and absorb each other’s stories\, inviting the audience to consider their own relationship to war on both a historic and personal scale.

SUMMARY:LAUNCH
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate eXit SPACE’s twenty-first season of dance with our annual kickoff event and fundraiser\, LAUNCH! \nLAUNCH differs from other eXit SPACE productions in that artists graciously volunteer their time to set and perform choreography so that ticket proceeds can offset a portion of the cost to keep NOD Theater alive and thriving. NOD is a space where artists from Seattle and beyond produce\, choreograph\, perform\, and witness dance; make their income; and bring communities together. But as with any theater\, lighting/sound/tech equipment\, marley upkeep\, facilities management\, and more\, make it a very expensive endeavor in such a coveted area on Capitol Hill. LAUNCH makes a huge difference in supporting the theater and the artists in it. \nFeatured choreographers:\nEva Crystal\, DaeZhane Day\, Maisy Neill\, Gabrielle Nomura Gainor\, Alex Kronz\, Sean O’Bryan\, Meredith Pellon\, Tyra Rose\, Annie St Marie\, Bri Wilson\, Sally Holloman\, and Marlo Martin.

SUMMARY:Noveltease Theatre: The Raven and Other Stories
DESCRIPTION:Noveltease Theatre\, Seattle’s premier literary burlesque company\, invites you to an evening of tantalizing haunts and devious delights drawn from the poetry and prose of Edgar Allan Poe. Drawing on classic Poe tales like “The Black Cat\,” “The Cask of Amontillado\,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart\,” among others\, this original story chronicles our Narrator’s dark descent into depravity. After the death of her beloved Eleanora\, the Narrator finds herself visited by a conspiracy of ravens who spur her to relive acts of cruelty\, revenge\, and of course\, murder. Driven to the edge of madness\, the Narrator must confront her worst impulses to be freed from grief and guilt nevermore. \nJesse Belle-Jones directs an ensemble-led adaptation of these classic tales\, conceived and choreographed by Scarlett Folds with a script by Sailor St. Claire. Bringing this Gothic world alive is a design team most nightmarishly talented. Bold costumes by Lady Drew Blood (GUNKED!)\, haunting scenic design by Bella Rivera (ZACH\, GOLD)\, and eerie lighting by Noveltease favorite Angelo Domitri (Hamlet\, The Great Gatsby) will bring Poe’s world to life (and death). \nNoveltease Company members Onyx Asili\, Fosse Jack\, Lulu La Lune\, Ramona Rhapsody\, Carson St. Clair\, and Miss Elaine Yes will star alongside guest artists Keyes\, Whisper de Corvo\, Pinay Grigio\, and Lavender Lascivious.

Claire. DESCRIPTION:spector of my eye–\nsun catches moon\nwave touches cloud\nlion lunges for lamb\nself brims with other \nwho are you to resist\nthe moon tugging at your sleeve\nfor the leaving and the leaving\nthe crying and the crying. \nImpossible Maps is a full-evening dance work that journeys through grief and transformation. The inhabitants of the piece take a pilgrimage across a landscape through the liminality of loss in search of awe–the connection to vastness that pulls us from the brink of horror.\nIn the midst of nature’s cyclical patterns that wreck ships and build sand dunes\, humanity’s constructed systems that push outliers to the edges and connect us to the design of our past\, we map the imaginal space of the afterlife. In the process we reshape ourselves around who we’ve lost and chart a new course. One that allows us to carry them with us into the still unknown.\nCast:\nEllie van Bever\nSara Caplan\nChloe Dylla\nRainbow Fletcher\nNicole Flores\nMadeleine Gregor\nMaisy Neill\nJanet Nguyen\nAlana O Rogers\nGuest: Devin Muñoz \nSet Contribution from: Julie Alexander \nC. Asa Call Bio\nthey/them \nI am an assemblage artist making work at the cross-section of dance\, film\, installation\, and poetry. I moved to Seattle shortly after earning my BA in Studio Arts and Art History from Wichita State and within a few years co-founded Coriolis Dance with colleague Natascha Greenwalt. I served as Co-artistic Director for 14 years dancing\, creating work\, and developing a movement research method called Postballet with Natascha and Mariko Nagashima. \nMy dance works span from site-specific installations to films to traditional theater works. The full-evening installation dance work What is Home an Obscure Kingdom an Opera Buffa It’s You Always You was a multi-stage interactive installation performance\, co-presented by Northwest Film Forum and supported by Velocity’s Creative Residency in 2018. \nI have a long history of collaboration with artists across disciplines\, as well\, most recently with sculptor Sarah Fetterman at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. Overall\, my art life has been an embarrassment of riches with experiences too numerous to name. Currently\, I am the host of The Shed\, a performance installation space in the Georgetown neighborhood that facilitates residencies and events for artists with complex practices.

Bold costumes by Lady Drew Blood (GUNKED!)\, haunting scenic design by Bella Rivera (ZACH\, GOLD)\, and eerie lighting by Noveltease favorite Angelo Domitri (Hamlet\, The Great Gatsby) will bring Poe’s world to life (and death). \nNoveltease Company members Onyx Asili\, Fosse Jack\, Lulu La Lune\, Ramona Rhapsody\, Carson St. Clair\, and Miss Elaine Yes will star alongside guest artists Keyes\, Whisper de Corvo\, Pinay Grigio\, and Lavender Lascivious.

SUMMARY:Impossible Maps
