SUMMARY:Fauxnique: How Do I Look?
DESCRIPTION:Fauxnique wields a provocative\, wry framework of drag\, dance\, and philosophy to confront identity\, femininity\, and self-image.\nHow Do I Look? is the latest work from Monique Jenkinson/Fauxnique\, the multifaceted artist\, choreographer\, writer\, and performer best known as the first cisgender woman anywhere\, ever to be crowned as a pageant-winning drag queen. With her rigorous ballet training buried in the bottom of her artistic toolbox\, Jenkinson emerged out of a feminist\, postmodern\, improvisational dance lineage and into the nightclub scene. There\, she fashioned Fauxnique in a laboratory of liberatory radical queer performance\, reclaiming ballet and learning to use drag and theory as modes of inquiry and entertainment. Jenkinson brings this fluency to this latest work. \nNow she dons her drag queen guise and wields her unique combination of precise physicality\, irreverent humor\, and gutsy vulnerability to ask the most vain\, mundane\, and loaded question: How Do I Look? With it\, she digs past glossy platitudes and flattering exaggerations into the hot mess of perception\, subjectivity\, identity\, and taste. How Do I Look? throws itself into the space—sometimes a chasm—between how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. As always\, Jenkinson’s work resists dogmatic answers and leans into philosophical modes of questioning\, considering the methodology of looking: by what means do we see the world and each other? By what means other than looking might we perceive each other\, art (especially works of art like this one)\, and the world? \nPart roast\, part dance\, part drag\, part stand-up\, part performance art\, this piece delves into an extreme close-up of the self. How Do I Look? poses a question that generates more questions—can I train myself to look without flinching\, without cringing? Can self-knowledge help me to know others? If I roast myself\, will you like me more? Is it even possible to roast myself? Do I really want to know?

SUMMARY:Amy O'Neal: Again\, There Is No Other (The Remix)
DESCRIPTION:A ritual of femme power and connection rooted in two decades of research and participation in street and contemporary dance cultures.\nAgain\, There Is No Other (The Remix) is a dark and joyful ritual merging street dance forms and contemporary dance. The work interrogates fear of the Feminine in patriarchal culture\, asking: If perceptions of race and gender are inseparable\, can we be a post-gender society when we are far from a post-race society? \nThrough hybridizing the nightclub\, the cypher (the circle)\, and the theater\, five physically multilingual\, femme-identified dancers explore touch\, support\, the imperative of connection\, the tensions of identity\, and the embrace of difference.

SUMMARY:Rose: You Are What You Eat
DESCRIPTION:A genre-defying musical shrine to queer identity and transformation invites us into an irreverent feast of gender\, memory\, and grief.\nOnce upon a vine\, Rose Jarboe’s aunt revealed that Rose not only had a twin sister in the womb\, but that she consumed her: “You ate her. That’s why you are the way you are.” This was a lot for Rose to swallow! In this musical shrine to the consumed twin\, Rose welcomes you into a feast of gender through song\, storytelling\, and a full plate of wordplay. \nCreated in partnership with the Bearded Ladies Cabaret. Featuring all original music written in collaboration with Emily Bate\, Rose Jarboe\, and Pax Ressler. \n“As queer folx\, however we identify\, we are always in dynamic tension between being who we are authentically and the tyranny of respectability: fitting in by making ourselves more palatable\, more recognizable to a cis-het society in order to get through the day\, escape harassment\, and for some of us\, just to survive. I don’t pass. I don’t fit into a clean\, commercialized narrative of transition. What I love about the story of Rose is that it is unmistakably disrespectful\, pretty tasteless\, and entirely me.”\n– Rose Jarboe \nContent Transparency\nThis performance includes themes of fetal mortality and growing up queer in Michigan in the 90s\, some graphic eating imagery\, and cannibal humor.

SUMMARY:Ogemdi Ude: MAJOR
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in deep cultural memory and archival research\, six Black femmes channel the power and poetry of majorette dance in a fierce investigation of memory\, sensuality\, and pride.\nMAJOR is a dance theater project exploring the physicality\, history\, sociopolitics\, and interiority of majorette dance\, a form that originated in the American South within Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the 1960s. These Black femme teams\, accompanied by marching bands\, created a movement style that requires master showmanship with allegiance to count\, undulation\, groove\, and sensual yet strong performativity. \nIn MAJOR\, six Black femmes embrace majorette form—a fundamental relic of Black girlhood—to pursue the intimate journey of returning to bodies they thought lost. Experiments in improvised and verbatim language intertwine with a music score that integrates Southern rap\, horns\, drumlines\, and melodic R&B and soul by Lambkin. \nThe Chord Archive is showcased alongside performances\, a physical and digital documentation of the creative process\, and personal historical accounts from former majorette dancers. \nA fierce investigation of physical memory\, sexuality\, sensuality\, and community\, MAJOR is a nuanced love letter to the folks who taught the team how to be proudly Black and proudly femme.

SUMMARY:Eiko Otake & Wen Hui: What Is War
DESCRIPTION:Dance luminaries Wen Hui and Eiko Otake create a complex tapestry of language\, movement\, and video to share their personal memories related to war.\nWen Hui (b.1960) is Chinese and currently working in Europe. She grew up in China during the Cultural Revolution. Eiko Otake (b.1952) is Japanese and lives in New York. She grew up in post-war Japan. Both are female performers/choreographers\, and filmmakers. \nIn January 2020\, Eiko visited Wen Hui in China for a month. It was where the artists began examining the personal memories they hold in their bodies. The pandemic obliged the artists to continue their dialogue at a distance. The process of co-editing a feature-length documentary film\, No Rule Is Our Rule\, that documented their time together in China\, led them to work together physically in the U.S. to co-create this new performance work. During creative residencies at Duke University\, Colorado College\, and Mass MOCA\, the collaborators also uncovered and learned new knowledge about war that continues to affect them deeply. \nIn this project\, Wen Hui and Eiko Otake create a complex tapestry of language\, movement\, and video to share their personal memories related to war. As they move together\, their bodies intimately support and absorb each other’s stories\, inviting the audience to consider their own relationship to war on both a historic and personal scale.

SUMMARY:dani tirrell: Leviticus or Love and to walk amongst HUMANS! Book II
DESCRIPTION:Book II is a performance piece that combines live and recorded music. This offering centers around Black and brown bodies leaving this world and entering the “afterlife\,” Leviticus or Love and to walk amongst humans. Book II brings the club to heaven and imagines what heaven or utopia would look like if Black bodies were free to imagine. \nThe piece explores ideas around death\, the afterlife\, and the pageantry and parade of religious ceremony. It also examines what it means to bear witness in the streets and how to bring people to “God” outside of a traditional church setting. \nThe performance connects the pomp and circumstance of the church to the pomp and circumstance of the club. The club setting represents a place where God can live in a community that embraces “sin” and welcomes those who are not traditionally considered “worthy” of God’s grace. Although the club had rules\, there was a sense of freedom in that space that was indescribable.

SUMMARY:Miguel Gutierrez: Super Nothing
DESCRIPTION:Super Nothing is a new dance performance by Miguel Gutierrez that works with archive to see how our past can provide a blueprint for a more rigorous honesty in the present. The piece is danced by performers from New York and Los Angeles. How do the dynamics of an art-making process reflect or deny the dynamics of life outside the studio? How is choreography a reflection of the desires\, insecurities\, and personal investments of the people in the room? How can a dance speak to the overwhelming and constant grief that undergirds our lives? \nbell hooks writes that\, “Moving\, we confront the realities of choice and location.” Thinking about movement in both the dance and geographic sense of the word\, this piece engages with our ideas about place/home\, time\, history\, and the strength and failings of “community.”
