This next iteration features Tariq and expands the work’s inquiry\, turning toward the darker\, more complex corners of wholeness. \n  \n\nDANCE… the final frontier! \nOUT THERE is an experimental dance festival featuring West Coast dance artists who fearlessly push boundaries by making their wildest ideas happen on stage. SUMMARY:Bennyroyce Royon: Chameleon
DESCRIPTION:Chameleon: A Journey of Queer Joy and Reinvention\nChameleon\, a multidisciplinary contemporary dance experience by artist Bennyroyce Royon\, offers a profound exploration of reinvention\, boundless creativity\, and queer joy. This powerful work delves deep into personal lived experiences\, confronting past traumas and celebrating the discovery of supportive communities. Through visceral\, dynamic movement\, innovative visual design\, and compelling theatrical elements\, “Chameleon” guides audiences on a transformative journey. It illuminates the resilience of the human spirit and the empowering process of shaping an unapologetic future—one that is authentic\, vibrant\, and filled with hope. SUMMARY:SFD+I: ISHMAEL HOUSTON-JONES + KEITH HENNESSEY
DESCRIPTION:Closer\, with music by jose e. abad\nAn improvised performance by Ishmael Houston-Jones (NY) and Keith Hennessy (SF) with live sound by jose e. abad \nIshmael and Keith first collaborated in the mid-90s and have continued for 25 years a deep conversation about art\, collaboration\, improvisation\, race\, activism\, sex\, dance\, history and futures. When they dance together\, the conversation and research continues. Sometimes we fight\, but there is always love. There will be questions\, there will be answers\, and much of the rest is unknown… \nKeith and jose have been in collaboration on multiple performance\, curation\, and teaching projects since 2016 and together have worked with Ishmael in the TRY project since 2020. Our relationships to each other\, to performing improvisation\, and to the worlds around us are the content of the work.

SUMMARY:SFD+I: BRKFST
DESCRIPTION:for now\, but not for long investigates the restoration and habitat complexity of the once contaminated\, post-industrial landscape of Olympic Sculpture Park. This work explores how our individual lives are woven into and affected by reinvention\, and it will highlight the diverse landscape by using moving bodies as sculptural entities. Regeneration\, decay\, attraction\, and repulsion will emerge through sustained duration\, partnering\, and non-codified movement\, guiding audiences through the meadows and groves native to the Pacific Northwest. Subtle sounds of the natural environment in combination with a set score will emphasize the ever-changing ecosystem using the human body as a visual guide. \nPresented through the Seattle Festival of Dance + Improvisation \nIn partnership with Seattle Art Museum\nFeaturing participants in the Seattle Festival of Dance + Improvisation Professional Performance Cohort \n

DESCRIPTION:RoCoCoCoCo — A Situation for Dancing\, in Four Movements\n\nI. March 26\, 7:30 PM · one hour | First Movement: Allegro Symone Sanz & Julia Sloane\nII. March 27\, 7:30 PM · one hour | Second Movement: Adagio Carlin Kramer & Amanda Morgan\nIII. March 28\, 7:30 PM · one hour | Third Movement: Andante Allie Hankins & Sylvia Schatz-Allison\nIV. April 2\, 7:30 PM · one hour | Finale & Coda | The Cast\nV. April 3\, 7:30 PM · four and a half hours (with intermission and shared refreshments) | The Symphony | The Cast\nVI. April 4\, 2 PM · four and a half hours (with intermission and shared refreshments) | The Symphony | The Cast \nSince 1995\, Heather Kravas has investigated choreographic\, somatic\, and collaborative practices in contemporary dance to explore the edges of performance. For Made in Seattle\, she offers RoCoCoCoCo—an evolving cycle of four dances\, shared across four evenings and culminating in two full-length presentations of the complete work. \nImagined as a DIY folk dance that turns into a snowflake\, fractals into a vortex\, veers into a grocery list\, emanates like an aura\, aligns like a pinball machine\, and collaborates like an ant colony\, RoCoCoCoCo slips beyond classification. \nInstead\, it proposes a new structure for performance—one that holds dancers and audiences alike in states of heightened attention\, curiosity\, and desire. Guided by the somatic dramaturgy of longtime collaborator Rebecca Brooks\, RoCoCoCoCo is created for Allie Hankins\, Carlin Kramer\, Amanda Morgan\, Symone Sanz\, Sylvia Schatz-Allison\, and Julia Sloane. The work traces the layered effort of dancing together—energetic\, rhythmic\, precise\, and tender. It invites us to sense how intimacy scales\, how perception expands\, and how dancing itself becomes a site for both clarity and complexity—a space of shared and essential presence. \nRoCoCoCoCo takes place in the black box of 12th Avenue Arts\, with spectators seated on three sides of the stage. The dancers share the space with two pianists performing Terry Riley’s Keyboard Study No. 1 on upright pianos bound back-to-back. The live sounds of the theater—breath\, footsteps\, resonance—are at times amplified\, at times overtaken by electric music. Lighting\, designed by longtime collaborator Madeline Best\, shifts\, echoing the slow transformations of daylight in nature. \nAudiences are invited to experience RoCoCoCoCo in many ways: as singular performances that stand on their own; as a sequence unfolding across several days; or as the complete work\, gathered in the final two evenings.

SUMMARY:Heather Kravas: RoCoCoCoCo

SUMMARY:The Bonnies: I'm on Fire\, You're on Fire\, We're on Fire
DESCRIPTION:Seattle performance duo The Bonnies (Kaitlin McCarthy and Jenny Peterson) merge their decade of comedy dance experience with their “more serious” art practice to debut an evening length joyride of grotesque femininity\, experimental indulgence\, and the intimacy of a friendship 15 years in the making.  \nInspired by the beloved absurdist 1966 Czech New Wave film\, Daisies\, The Bonnies harness their perceived femininity–the silly\, slutty\, trivial\, and excessive–to craft a world where fantasies can play out on a larger-than-life scale: a candy-colored universe of impulse and freewheeling femme chaos. In a collision of eras\, The Bonnies pull from 60s cinema\, Bruce Springsteen’s catalogue\, the cultural phenomenon surrounding Lorena Bobbitt\, and Jenny and Kaitlin’s fantasy bedroom dances–both adolescent and contemporary. Working their way towards euphoria–and the inevitable crash down–The Bonnies (and their rainbow monster puppet alter egos) teeter between vision and delusion\, manifesting a shared destiny built from queer platonic love.  \nThe sound score by Jenny includes subversive covers of nostalgic classics (both 90s club anthems and road trip sing-alongs) side-by-side with sweeping original compositions in synth\, piano\, and voice. Riding the edge of parody into sincerity\, a collection of cultural references collide into something entirely new.  \nVisual design by Kaitlin manifests inside a fully operational set (by Teia O’Malley)\, a color-pop homage to both Věra Chytilová‘s saccharine-hued Daisies and an ecstatic obsession with texture. Two ornately handcrafted wearable art pieces distill the visual ethos into two characters of pure fantasy played by dancers Hendri Wa and Jackson Knappen.  \nAn interdisciplinary escapade through wild imagination\, I’m on Fire\, You’re on Fire\, We’re on Fire grapples with the morally complex territory of fantasy\, violence\, and vulnerability of desire\, cloaked as a ditzy comedy routine.

SUMMARY:Bridge Project 2026
DESCRIPTION:New works by Miguel Almario\, Olivia Anderson\, Jessica Jobaris & General Magic\nThree brand new works and fresh takes\nBridge Project is Velocity’s Emerging Creative Incubator\, a multigenerational\, intensive process aimed at connecting artists to each other and audiences to dance artists. This year’s Bridge Project features the work of Miguel Almaria\, Olivia Anderson\, Jessica Jobaris after an intensive 5-week rehearsal process at 12th Ave Arts. As an audience member\, you will be invited to engage in a written feedback process that provides the choreographers with valuable information to help with their artist development. \nMiguel Almario | Working TItle: Hard Feelings\nHard Feelings is about cost.  The toll of belonging to a community built on community and competition\, or pushing a body past what it can give\, of choosing an art form that never stops asking for more. \nThe work aims to honor the Black and Brown American roots of street dance while challenging the way these forms are seen\, consumed\, and contained. Hard Feelings carries the weight of both community and confrontation\, and showcases the body as an archive: tracking years of physical pursuit. Every step adds interest. Every injury compounds debt. Through the eyes of an aging mover\, Hard Feelings examines the balance between respect and rivalry\, devotion and decay. \n  \nJessica Jobaris | Fucking Mercy\nRelentless\, irreverent\, and oddly hopeful\, Fucking Mercy\, doesn’t ask for forgiveness; it just wants to see if we can still look each other in the eye after the world’s gone feral. A social autopsy of cruelty\, performed in motion\, this trio becomes a crucible where the urge to dominate collides with the ache to belong. Mercy here isn’t some soft-focus virtue; it’s weaponized\, withheld\, begged for\, and occasionally\, miraculously\, offered. The dancers\, and audience\, stagger between the wretched and the sacred\, testing how much humanity can survive in a body that’s fighting to stay alive. \n  \nOlivia Anderson | Untitled New Work\nThis dance is rooted in improvisation—an act of listening\, surrender\, and response. For me\, movement begins not with choreography\, but with a need: a physical and spiritual need to express what lives inside the body. Dance is first a form of prayer\, a way to connect to self and spirit\, before it becomes performance. As fascism casts a shadow on our horizon\, I wonder: What can art do now? I believe it can do what it has always done—offer a space for resistance\, for remembering\, for rehumanizing. In this piece\, my body becomes both question and answer. Through breath\, emotion\, and embodied storytelling\, I seek to communicate in a language that bypasses intellect and speaks directly to the nervous system. In moving\, I hope to move something in you.
