SUMMARY:Bridge Project 2026
DESCRIPTION:New works by Miguel Almario\, Olivia Anderson\, Jessica Jobaris & General Magic\nThree brand new works and fresh takes\nBridge Project is Velocity’s Emerging Creative Incubator\, a multigenerational\, intensive process aimed at connecting artists to each other and audiences to dance artists. This year’s Bridge Project features the work of Miguel Almaria\, Olivia Anderson\, Jessica Jobaris after an intensive 5-week rehearsal process at 12th Ave Arts. As an audience member\, you will be invited to engage in a written feedback process that provides the choreographers with valuable information to help with their artist development. \nMiguel Almario | Working TItle: Hard Feelings\nHard Feelings is about cost.  The toll of belonging to a community built on community and competition\, or pushing a body past what it can give\, of choosing an art form that never stops asking for more. \nThe work aims to honor the Black and Brown American roots of street dance while challenging the way these forms are seen\, consumed\, and contained. Hard Feelings carries the weight of both community and confrontation\, and showcases the body as an archive: tracking years of physical pursuit. Every step adds interest. Every injury compounds debt. Through the eyes of an aging mover\, Hard Feelings examines the balance between respect and rivalry\, devotion and decay. \n  \nJessica Jobaris | Fucking Mercy\nRelentless\, irreverent\, and oddly hopeful\, Fucking Mercy\, doesn’t ask for forgiveness; it just wants to see if we can still look each other in the eye after the world’s gone feral. A social autopsy of cruelty\, performed in motion\, this trio becomes a crucible where the urge to dominate collides with the ache to belong. Mercy here isn’t some soft-focus virtue; it’s weaponized\, withheld\, begged for\, and occasionally\, miraculously\, offered. The dancers\, and audience\, stagger between the wretched and the sacred\, testing how much humanity can survive in a body that’s fighting to stay alive. \n  \nOlivia Anderson | Untitled New Work\nThis dance is rooted in improvisation—an act of listening\, surrender\, and response. For me\, movement begins not with choreography\, but with a need: a physical and spiritual need to express what lives inside the body. Dance is first a form of prayer\, a way to connect to self and spirit\, before it becomes performance. As fascism casts a shadow on our horizon\, I wonder: What can art do now? I believe it can do what it has always done—offer a space for resistance\, for remembering\, for rehumanizing. In this piece\, my body becomes both question and answer. Through breath\, emotion\, and embodied storytelling\, I seek to communicate in a language that bypasses intellect and speaks directly to the nervous system. In moving\, I hope to move something in you.

SUMMARY:Song of the Summer
DESCRIPTION:Picture this: You are speeding down the highway with your best friends. You are on your way to karaoke or some dumb event that you wish you didn’t have to go to. Gazing out the car window\, you watch the world end. You question if your life amounted to anything or your art ever benefited anyone….you briefly wonder if you’re going to scream\, cry\, or throw up….instead\, you decide to quickly make art with your friends because you love each other or whatever. So from a completely shattered and kinda hot place\, you plan a one night only show that explores Robyn’s pop hit “Missing U.” \nThis story? It’s about us– kelly langeslay\, Drama Tops\, and Bluescreen\, making three different dances and showing you them. We will charge admission because it will be pretty cool. If you are thinking about not coming\, just remember that by attending you might just save the world. Yeah\, the stakes are high. If you don’t come\, the world will definitely end in a fabulous explosion of sulfur and fumes. Wow\, that’s on you

SUMMARY:OUT THERE Week 2
DESCRIPTION:Strap in for for OUT THERE\, Velocity’s brand new whiplash of a dance festival October 2–12\, 2025\, featuring West Coast dance artists who are here to f*ck shit up\, and show us what is OUT THERE.  \nOUT WHERE? Not OVER there. HERE! OUT HERE! On the West Coast\, where experimentalism has always been a primary making material of the artists who live here\, pushing our region towards a more connected\, sassier\, imaginative\, expansive\, expressive\, engaging\, intuitive\, sweaty\, and collaborative future! \n  \nNightly Schedule / Each OUT THERE show includes a DJ let PRE/POST show party \nPrevibrations | FREE no RSVP 6pm – drinks + music \nOUT THERE dance show | 7:30pm – two\, thirty minute works by two west coast movement artists \nafterglow |  FREE no RSVP 8:30pm – a party featuring drinks\, dj for dancing and post show conversation at Velocity’s popup bar \n  \nWEEK 2 –  OCT 9–11\n\nJordan MacIntosh-Hougham + \nJesse Freitas (SEA) //\nVanessa Goodman (VAN) with \nTonga Collective (POL) \nThe second week of the festival takes a more cerebral approach to the body. With AI\, where does the organic end and the artificial begin? And looking inward\, is our chemistry our humanity? Both questions blur the boundaries between self and science.  \nSeattle’s Jordan MacIntosh-Hougham and Jesse Freitas\, and Vancouver’s Vanessa Goodman in collaboration with Tonga Collective from Poland show us that our scientific explorations are still of us\, and of the body\, at the end of the day.

On the West Coast\, where experimentalism has always been a primary making material of the artists who live here\, pushing our region towards a more connected\, sassier\, imaginative\, expansive\, expressive\, engaging\, intuitive\, sweaty\, and collaborative future! \n  \nNightly Schedule / Each OUT THERE show includes a DJ let PRE/POST show party \nPrevibrations | FREE no RSVP 6pm – drinks + music \nOUT THERE dance show | 7:30pm – two\, thirty minute works by two west coast movement artists \nafterglow |  FREE no RSVP 8:30pm – a party featuring drinks\, dj for dancing and post show conversation at Velocity’s popup bar \n  \nWEEK 1 – OCT 2–4 \nmaia melene durfé (SEA) //\nJobel Medina + Elliott “L” Sellers (LAX) \nThe first week of the festival is a slow simmer against the backdrop of chaos\, with artists exploring subtle connections amidst aggressive existentialism and dysregulation. \nCome see dancers shine in what we do best; namely expressing the body-based and intangible.  In this split-bill Seattle’s maia melene durfé and Jobel Medina + Elliot Sellers from LA each share meaning that is elegantly unresolved\, performance that is virtuosic and deft\, and compositions that highlight the body as potential for innovation.

SUMMARY:SFD+I: SPLIT BILL
DESCRIPTION:SPLIT BILL\nFeaturing two new works by \nJungWoong Kim\, rachael lincoln + leslie seiters with contributing direction from bebe miller and amelia rudolph\n\n\nPresented through the Seattle Festival of Dance + Improvisation \n\nTwo works from some of the most compelling names in dance\, showcasing some of the teachers in residence during our beloved Research Week\, the final week of the Seattle Festival of Dance + Improvisation. \n\nDEMON\, AJAR | Jungwoong kim\nInspired in part by a Korean folk tale from Ulsan\, the village Jungwoong is from – a story in which he performed as a young dancer studying traditional Korean shamanistic dance. \nToday Jungwoong is interested in what the story has to say about how one might take action when encountering dark forces. In the folk tale\, a man returns to his home and begins to remove his shoes in the traditional maru threshold of his home. He sees a stranger’s shoes where none should be. Through a door ajar\, he glimpses a demon within his home. In the traditional tale\, the man neither rushes thoughtlessly and aggressively toward danger\, nor does he freeze in hopelessness or fear. Instead he begins to move\, to feel himself and his own power. He begins to dance in the maru threshold. \n  \nFASTCRAFT: THE UNDOING PROJECT | Bebe Miller + Amelia Rudolph in collaboration with Performers Rachael Lincoln + Leslie Seiters\n25-years co-creating and performing duet work made through cycles of slow\, iterative processes\, Lincoln and Seiters attempt “fast craft” as a practice of focus and immediacy\, allowing for unfinished\, messy\, unsure\, and unknown. The project comprises multiple commissioned duets\, each created in a limited encounter with an invited dance-maker and rehearsed and performed as is\, unedited and without development. This approach is our counter to perfectionism\, to fastidiousness\, and to finding closure. The performance offers the pieces as a fragmented collection\, and leaves space for the audience to discover what resurfaces and resonates in the catalog of undone. Bebe Miller and Amelia Rudolph are the first two contributing directors.

SUMMARY:Velocity Presents Next Fest NW 2024: Total Chaos
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT NEXT FEST NW:\nNext Fest NW is Velocity’s experimental new works festival\, celebrating contemporary dance and\nmovement-based artists innovating in our region. For this year’s festival\, Hannah Krafcik + Emily\nJones\, Artie Thomas\, and Symone Sanz will each be in residency at SFD+I and will make new works\nfocusing on the theme Total Chaos for the show premiering in December 2024. \nABOUT THIS ITERATION:\nFor this iteration\, artists were asked to respond the idea of TOTAL CHAOS. “Total”\, in this context\,\nmeaning “complete” but it also “damaged beyond its value”. In this time of disarray\, disorder\, and\nmess. “Total Chaos” is an investigation of cacophony\, grief\, order\, and purpose. \nABOUT THE WORKS:\nSTASIA COUP | A drag artist embarks on a journey into solo parenthood. Rambunctious childhood\ndreamscapes and intimate storytelling combine in a sentimental romp into the adventure of making a\nwhole new life.\nHANNAH KRAFCIK + EMILY JONES | In The Swirl\, optical illusions spur conceptual inquiry: Two dancers\nperform as a “set” rather than a binary or pair\, playing with the way multiple meanings hide in plain\nview.\nSYMONE SANZ | ‘WRETCH’ explores “powerful\, predator energy” (-Seattle Dances) brought to life by\npunk rock and grunge music that embodies Seattle culture at its core.
