Party Dances with Amy O’Neal
This open level class explores hip hop and house dance history, grooves, steps, and their relationships to one another. Amy has taught evolving versions of this class since 2002. As a practicing guest of Black social dance culture, she participates in clubbing, battling, sessions, and advocacy.
Amy is a long-time mentee of Sekou Heru of Dance Fusion NYC and has learned from and with many other notable house and hip hop dancers in clubs and studios. Amy has danced to hip hop and house music in Seattle nightclubs with members of Circle of Fire, Massive Monkees, and many other individuals with their own unique style since 2006.
Along with dani tirrell, she co-founded the house classes and open sessions at The Beacon: Massive Monkees studio in 2014 and co-organized the first house dance battle in Seattle, Seattle House Dance Project, in 2017. She taught the first house class for STG’s DANCE This Intensive in 2016 and started the street dance curriculum at the University of Washington in 2017.
She is passionate about helping students become more media literate about street dance culture. She is also an award-winning choreographer who merges the social and experimental natures of contemporary and street dance for the theater context.
