pnb: olivier wevers is 1 of 4 chosen for nat’l choreographers initiative

Here’s part of a press release PNB sent out today, re: the fabulous Olivier Wevers.

(Wevers, by the way, joins Sonia Dawkins, Kiyon Gaines, Barry Kerollis, Stacy Lowenberg, Stanko Milov, and Jonathan Porretta at PNB’s Choreographers Showcase on Saturday, June 13, 2009, 7:30 pm. This is always a fun show. Here’s my review of last year’s Showcase…and an article I wrote on Wevers two years ago. Tix are cheap: $10—20).

“ORANGE COUNTY, CA — The 6th annual National Choreographers Initiative will take place this summer from July 6-25. During three weeks of intense creative effort at the dance studios of University of California, Irvine, teams of choreographers and professional dancers will produce four new dance works culminating in a public performance at Irvine Barclay Theatre on Saturday, July 25 at 8pm. Tickets to the NCI Discovery performance are available by calling 949-854-4646 or online at www.thebarclay.org.

The choreographers invited by Director, Molly Lynch, to participate this summer are: Sidra Bell, Deanna Carter, Rick McCullough, and Olivier Wevers. Each choreographer is given complete freedom to choose the style and theme of their work. Artistic Directors from dance companies around the country will be invited to preview the new works for possible inclusion in their companies’ repertoire. (The choreographers retain the right to promote and license the works they have created.)

The first NCI took place in July, 2004 with the idea of promoting the creation and production of professional dance. NCI provides an opportunity to engage outstanding choreographers from around the U.S. in the creative process. Since its inception, twenty choreographers have been invited to create new work through the National Choreographers Initiative. Twelve of those works have gone on to be performed with various companies around the country and abroad.”
